My wife and I renovated a 21 year old condo. It is in an old established neighborhood with large trees, and is within walking distance to two grocery stores. We updated every appliance we could afford to with Energy Star labeled appliances. We freecycled everything we replaced. All of the bulbs are CLF's within the entire house. We put our most-used electric devices on power strips and turn them off at night. It amazes me that all of these changes were so easy, and it is reflected so well in my energy bills. Our parents and family cannot believe that we spend collectively $25 on both electricy and natural gas for our 1000 sqft condo. More people would switch if they could live with the changes for a trial period and realize how much money and energy they could be saving. It was a fun process, and I tell everyone who will listen how they can save money by changing to a lower impact lifestyle.
