After our home burned due to a lightning strike, we capitalized on the opportunity to modernize and make efficiency improvements. Double glass, improved insulation, decreased air leakage, appliances and heat pumps have reduced our utility load by 50%. Now (after price increases) we have utility bills approximately one third of our neighbors. Whether "green" is economic or environmental, you don't have to be hit by lightning to find easy to reduce your utility bills. Reflective window films, programmable thermostats with easy "momentary overides" that return to preset programs are quick, cheap and home owner simple to install. Don't forget LED lighting for intermittent use, they use 10% of the electricity of a compact florescent!
