We bought an old house (110 yrs) and wanted to start saving energy bills which were roughly $300 mo. We called the electric company and asked for a feasibility study and was recommended to a company to install an HVAC system which we did not have. Well while tring to get the tax credit I found out that the system I was sold did not qualify because it did not meet the DOE standards. I didn't realize there were different models of the same system and each model has a different (SEER, EER, HSPF rating) My installer never mentioned the importance of matching HVAC components so that you can get the most effeciency from your system. Lesson I learned bigger in the HVAC world does not always mean better it can mean inefficiency. By the way these are DOE's recommended ratings (EER=13; SEER=15.5; HSPF=9.0) By the way I have a Trane Heat Pump with a SEER rating of 16 in a 1750 sq ft home.
